How do we define a semiconductor? It's mainly made of materials with certain resistance (it is among the resistance of a conductor and a non-conductor). The resistance of semi-conductors also is influenced by variations of temperature or used “impurities”.

The term “impurities” means the other elements added to the material. The finished combination characterizes the semi-conductors as power semiconductor devices of type-n and type-t.

The use of type-n and type-t semiconductors is necessary to create diodes as well as transistors. These days silicon is eventually turning into the most popular substance for producing semi-conductors.

Specially to let the flow of electrical current in only one sense diodes are applied. They are produced of semi-conductor material. There is a piece of + (positive) combination, - (negative) combination and so-called pn-transfer fixed as barrier level in each diode. Diodes make electrical circuits changing between direct and alternating current. As diodes let current go only in a single direction only a part of the period or cycle is completed. Rectifier is the word for such a junction.

Concerning the light diodes known as LED, they are used to produce light at low voltages without producing warmth. These diodes are applied in all units of modern electronic gadgets like TV sets or stereo units specially to sign the standby mode.

Moore's law gave way to the popularization of thyristors theory. What is the most significant point to make complex power semiconductor devices at smaller prices? That's lithography. Speaking of optical lithography, it now leads to the development of new techniques as it has reached its development limit. It is now actively being substituted by more up-to-date ultraviolet lithography and nano-imprint lithography. Read the rest of this entry »
